Women Airforce Service Pilots: In 1943, the Women's Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron (WAFS), commanded by Nancy Harkness Love, merged with the Women's Flying Training program. The result was the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP), headed by famed aviatrix Jacqueline Cochran (who, in 1953, became the first woman to break the sound barrier). More than 25,000 women applied for pilot training under the WASP program. Of these, 1,074 graduated and 900 remained in December 1944, when the WASP program was officially terminated. WASPs flew many diverse assignments, serving as flight instructors, tow pilots, test pilots, and ferry pilots.
Though General "Hap" Arnold, Chief of the AAF, initially considered the idea unfeasible (believing that women were too "high strung"), the WASPs proved their value. WASPs filled a vital need for military service pilots, during a time when male pilots were needed for combat duties. The WASPs logged over 60 million miles and flew virtually every type of aircraft from trainers to fighters to heavy bombers, often flying them as skillfully as their male counterparts. Thirty-eight WASPs died in service to their country during WWII.
Unlike other women who served in a military capacity during WWII, the WASPs were never militarized, and remained civil service employees throughout. Despite having the privileges of officers, they did not receive the pay, injury, or death benefits given to male pilots sharing the same risks. The thirty-eight WASPs who died were buried without military honors. Sadly, for over thirty years, WASPs were not given due recognition for their tremendous service, dedication and sacrifices. Finally, in 1977, Congress granted WWII veteran's status to former WASPs. Official military acceptance from the USAF came two years later. In 1984, the Victory Medal was awarded to each WASP, and those who served for more than one year were also awarded the American Theater medal.
"You and more than 900 of your sisters have shown that you can fly wingtip to wingtip with your brothers. If ever there was doubt in anyone's mind that women could become skilled pilots, the WASPs dispelled that doubt. I want to stress how valuable the whole WASP program has been for the country... We of the Army Air Force are proud of you, we will never forget our debt to you."
General "Hap" Arnold

The WASPs were trailblazers, and paved the way for future female USAF pilots. Our Signature Series WASP Jackets are a tribute to these pioneering aviators.
Beware of inferior imitations being sold by others. Inexpensive imported leather jackets found in department or discount stores and overpriced imported "designer labeled" leather jackets found in boutiques are often inferior in construction and materials. All US Wings Signature Series leather jackets are made from the highest quality Grade "A" leather, constructed to US Military specs or better. In addition, you can feel good about wearing a quality garment that was handcrafted in the USA. The genuine USA-made Signature Series line is ONLY available online through our website or from our Retail Pilot Shop in Stow, OH.

Finally, an A-2 jacket tailored just for women! Our Signature Series WASP A-2 is an authentic reproduction of the WWII A-2 made for the WASPs. It is made from the finest naked goatskin leather, and includes all the classic A-2 features: front cargo pockets, snap-down collar, stitched-down epaulets, brass zipper, and one piece back and sleeves. We've also added side-entry handwarmer pockets and an inside pocket to store your gear. What makes this jacket different from our other A-2s is the fit -- it is made specifically for women. The standard A-2 can be worn by women, but it is often ill-fitting. Our WASP A-2 has the modifications most wanted by women. It's roomier where it needs to be, and it features shorter sleeve and body length. Made in the USA exclusively for US Wings.

100% Pure Silk!
For that added touch of panache, nothing beats a silk scarf! Our white, authentic aviation scarf is 100% pure silk and is hand-sewn in Tibet. The scarf measures 6 ft. long and 14 in. wide, and is the perfect complement to any of our fine leather flight jackets. This silk scarf is made in the same tradition as its World War II counterparts rarely do you see a picture of a pilot who is not wearing one. Our authentic aviation silk scarf can be hand-washed and air dried.
You must see and feel this scarf to truly appreciate its quality. Others may sell knock-offs, but the "real thing" is available exclusively from US Wings*! The US Wings white silk scarf has always identified its wearer as a true professional. Recalling the bygone glory days of open cockpit barnstormers, the white silk scarf remains popular with today's fashion-conscious individuals... nothing quite captures the daredevil spirit of the aviator like a silk scarf worn with a leather flight jacket! Whether you're a dashing pilot (or just want to look like one!), this classic piece of aviation apparel is for you!

Women's Patch Combo
|
 |
 |
A patch combo for the ladies, featuring a Rosie the Riveter patch and a Fifinella WASP patch!
Rosie the Riveter was a popular icon of World War II and represented American women doing their part for the War effort. She also symbolized the strength and determination of the American woman. "Rosies" took over many jobs traditionally held by males (including heavy industrial work like the riveting & welding), and proved that they were just as capable as men. This patch is a reproduction of the original poster and measures 3" x 4".
The second half of our combo is the Fifinella patch, the insignia of the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP). During WWII, these women flyers filled a vital need for military service pilots at a time when male pilots were needed for combat duties. The WASPs logged over 60 million miles and flew virtually every type of aircraft from trainers to fighters to heavy bombers. "Fifinella" (origianlly designed by Walt Disney) is a winged female gremlin wearing goggles & boots whose job was to ward off male gremlins (who were believed to cause aircraft malfunctions).
We're offering this patch combo at a special price. If purchased separately, these two patches would retail for $9.90.
